Costa Rica July 2021 - Day 2, Part 2

July 7, 2021 - Continued

(Teri) At the gift shop in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve I found a Monteverde magnet and we bought a little chocolate bar.  

It took me quite a while to pick out a mask.  I wanted all of them!  It’s a good thing they didn’t offer shipping or I would have bought out the store.  Each mask was different and they all were beautiful.  There were several different sizes but I was limited to available space in my suitcase. 

Here is the one I bought:

 


The masks are hand-made by the indigenous groups of the area and are carved from balsa wood.

After the gift shop we walked to a coffee shop on the grounds that had many hummingbird feeders around their patio.  We were there about 30 minutes watching the feeders.

Our next stop was lunch.  We went to Agora which was once owned by Giovanni’s wife.

 We once again had to wash our hands before entering. 

It was a pleasant day to sit outside.

I had Bowl Caliente.  It had chicken, quinoa and veggies.  It was okay.

 

Mark had a sandwich with sliced beef.  He tried an orange/ginger drink.  It had a lot of pulp and hard bits of ginger.  He didn’t care for it.

7/7/2021 Continued (Mark) –

After the Preserve we walked immediately next door to the Hummingbird Café. We watched feeders for about 30 minutes got great looks at several species.

We stopped for lunch on the way back at a restaurant that had been started by Giovanni’s wife and was now owned by his daughter.  The food was good and we were dropped back at the hotel around 2:00.

It once again rained on and off throughout the afternoon, and it appeared that the restaurant was only serving the groups, so we headed down the road (with our ponchos!) to a nearby sandwich shop. There we split a very good bean and cheese quesadilla and a BLT sandwich. It was even cheaper at about $12 and filled us up just fine.

(Teri) For dinner we walked a couple blocks to El Chinamo.

 

Mark ordered everything in Spanish!  All his hard studying was being put to good use.

We spent the rest of our evening sitting out on our patio.

Costa Rica July 2021 - Day 2, Part 1

(Teri) Our guide was scheduled to pick us up at 6:30 a.m. so we had an early morning wake up. 

Breakfast is included in our stay at the hotel and we had a quick meal of fruit, black beans and rice, toast, and scrambled eggs.  Almost every meal we had in Costa Rica included fruit and black beans and rice.  Usually, the black beans and rice were mixed together.

Giovanni was on time with Victor, our driver.  Victor is also a guide and spoke excellent English.  Giovanni spoke good English with a heavy Spanish accent.


Before we got in the car, we were asked to use hand sanitizer, and while in the car we all wore masks.

Our trip today was the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, which was only a 20-minute drive from our hotel.

The Preserve doesn’t open until 7:00 so we had a couple of minutes to wait.

We had our temperature taken and were directed to the hand washing station. 


Guiovanni went inside to pay our entrance fee and get our wrists bands.  Our entry was $26 each, but the price is lower for Costa Ricans, and even lower for those from the Monteverde area.


Our bands have our guide’s name, the hotel we are staying at and that we are from the US. 

I went inside the entrance station while Giovanni was purchasing our tickets and saw these beautiful masks on the walls. 


I mentioned to Giovanni how much I liked the masks and he causally (!!!) mentioned that I could buy them in the gift shop.  I couldn’t wait to get to the gift shop!!!

After putting on our wrists bands we then had to go to a booth and have someone scan our wrists bands before entrance to the preserve.


Cloud forests are found in tropical regions where the clouds intersect the mountain ranges. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve is located on the Tilarán mountain range in northern Costa Rica at an elevation of 1500 meters (5000 feet) above sea level on the continental divide.

The birding was pretty slow and the trails typically were in heavy shade.

Geovanni named several birds he was hearing but we never saw most of them.

Giovanni had a lot of stories about his experiences.  With slow birding, we pretty much heard his life story.

We walked down to a waterfall as our turning around point. 

We saw many beautiful flowers along the way.

We spent 5 1/2 hours in the preserve before hitting the gift shop.

7/7/2021 (Mark) – Went to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.  Guide was Giovanni Bello, an older gentleman who lived in Monteverde and who had served as manager of the Reserve for a period of time.  He was extremely knowledgeable about the birds, plants, and history of the preserve.  Birding was surprisingly slow overall, as most of the reserve was tall, dense forest.  The habitat was moist and beautiful, but birds were tough to spot, and there wasn’t a lot of singing going on.  A tropical storm in the gulf had the winds blowing pretty hard, and perhaps that had an impact.

The first part of the walk was on some forest trails. We stopped at a fruiting avocado tree where the Resplendent Quetzals had been feeding, but no luck the first time. After walking quite a bit we returned, as several guides had indicated that they had been seen there. We returned and found a couple of males high up in the trees.  Beautiful birds, but tough looks. We also got close looks at a snake in a tree alongside the trail. We were given a couple of different local names, but the most common accepted name seems to be Side-striped Palm Pitviper. It is venomous, but was no threat as long as no one tried to touch it!

After a short bathroom break we went up the “old entrance road” which was a bit more open. Saw a 2-toed sloth tucked into a tree. We never would have spotted it without other guides being on it already, and even then it was hard to make it out as a sloth rather than a clump of moss.

We did see several Emerald Toucanets, including one with a large Stick Insect and a youngster poking it's head out of a nest cavity.

Costa Rica July 2021 - Day 1 (Monteverde)

Did you guess we were in Costa Rica?

Just a few weeks ago Mark asked me if I wanted to go somewhere for my birthday.  Of course I said “Yes!  Let’s go to Costa Rica”.

This was our 5th trip to Costa Rica but the first time we have gone in July.  This time of year is considered the ‘rainy season’.

We contacted our usual travel agent but she didn’t get back to us for a couple of days and we needed to arrange this trip quickly.  So, we found another travel agent who responded immediately to Mark’s e-mail. 

Costa Rica Focus will be our travel agent for future trips.  Mark told them where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do and everything was set up within a couple of days.

Mark wrote a journal during our trip.  When we first started traveling he journaled all our trips but it’s been several years since he did that.

These blogs will be his journal and my notes from the trip.

July 5, 2021 (Teri)

As usual, we spent the night before our flight in San Antonio.  The La Quinta Airport hotel is convenient to the airport and we can leave our car there for up to two weeks for only $20!  If you know how much airport parking is, you know that $20 is a great deal.

We started our usual Dairy Queen Blizzard contest but this time we changed it up a bit.  Instead of guessing what bird we would see first, we each guessed the first five birds we would see before the other person.  The person with the most birds gets treated to a Blizzard when we return home.

The winner will be announced at the end of the trip.

July 6, 2021

Since our flight was leaving at 5:30 a.m., we needed to be at the airport about 4:15.  Our hotel used to have a shuttle to the airport that started running at 4:00 a.m.  Now the shuttle doesn’t start running until 9:00 a.m.

So, for the first time ever, we took an UBER!  It was so easy!  Mark set everything up the night before and our driver was right on time. 

Our flight from San Antonio, Texas to Miami, Florida was 3 hours.  It was full.  First Class doesn’t get you many extras these days.  No movie.  If you want music, you download the American Airlines app.  Our breakfast (? at 6:30 am) was a dry, cold turkey sandwich. It wasn’t very good.

The flight from Miami to San Jose was on the same plane so we didn’t have to hunt for another terminal.  This flight was also 3 hours.  We had another turkey sandwich for lunch but this time at least we got a chocolate chip cookie.

We didn’t see our driver (Roy) when we came out of the airport, we were a little early and he was a little late.  But about 15 minutes later we found him and got on our way.

The drive to our hotel was 3 hours. 

We drove by many small stores.  A lot of people turn the front of their house into a small store.

Roy stopped a couple of times when he saw an interesting bird or some great scenery.

It was a relief to get out of the car for a while and take off our masks.

Costa Rica still requires masks almost every place we visited.  We also had to wash our hands before entering some places.  And, our temperature was taken at a few places before entering.  There are wash stations outside every establishment.

7/6/2021 (Mark) – We had a 5:30 flight from San Antonio to Miami, and then took the same plane to San Jose. We arrived a little early and missed our driver outside of the airport, but we found each other quickly enough and headed of toward Monteverde. It was a pretty drive, first out of San Jose, then along the Pacific Coast, and finally up into the mountains (elevation about 4500).  We arrived at Hotel de Montaña Monteverde, which was an older but nice hotel. Unlike the Eco-Lodges we were used to, this was a hotel on the edge of a small town, surrounded by other hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. They were not very full but had a group of college-aged kids and later a group of adults from Germany (probably).

(Teri) At first we were given keys to Room #5.  It was smaller than we expected.  Since this hotel is almost empty, Mark returned to the front desk to see about getting a different room.  He returned with keys to Room #8 and we were completely satisfied.

(Mark) The manager told us that they wouldn’t be serving dinner that evening as there weren’t enough guests, but might the next couple of nights depending on demand.

We birded around the hotel grounds, which included a great overlook over a large forested valley, and a short trail down to a small pond. It was sprinkling on and off so we didn’t want to get too far away from the hotel, but we saw a good variety of birds and heard Three-wattled Bellbird clanging away in the distance, as we would the entire time we were there!

We caught a glimpse of a White-eared Ground-Sparrow and were both surprised at how bright and attractive a bird it was, but I wasn't able to get a picture. 

We decided to walk down to dinner at a nearby restaurant that had been pointed out by our driver. We split a chicken quesadilla and a Margarita pizza. Too much food as usual, but it was good and not too expensive. About $25 for the meal.

As we finished eating it started to absolutely pour down rain. We had left our raingear in the hotel, apparently so that it wouldn’t get wet!  We walked next door (under an awning) to a small grocery store and picked out a little bag of coconut cookies and a chocolate bar to try. We stood under the awning for a bit more and watched it pour. We finally noticed someone come out of the store with a cheap plastic poncho that they’d bought, so we went in a bought two of them for a total of $5.00.  The rain had let up some by then, but we were able to walk home and keep ourselves as well as Teri’s purse and camera dry. Lesson learned…

(Teri) We got back to the hotel without getting soaking wet.  Mark had requested a fan for our room and it had been delivered while we were at dinner.  The temperature is pleasant but the rooms aren’t air conditioned.

We took our computers down to the lobby to check e-mail.  Our driver for tomorrow (Giovanni) stopped by to make sure we had arrived. The front desk pointed us out and he came over to introduce himself.

We were all set for our tour tomorrow. 

We both slept very well after our long day.

Next time: Our first full day in Monteverde.
