We continue to be amazed at the wonderful people we have met during our travels and volunteering. Carolyn and Wally were volunteers at Santa Ana when we were there and we have kept in touch with them since leaving the Valley. They sent us an e-mail and invited us to stop by and visit them in Ohio at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge where they are volunteering for a month. So, here we are. We were planning on driving through Ohio, just not this far north. We’re about 2 miles from Lake Erie.
Tomorrow starts the “Biggest Week in American Birding” according to the Ottawa NWR website. It’s suppose to start the peak of migration in Northwest Ohio. The weather forecast for tonight is a low of 34!
In the first couple of hours we were here we’ve already gotten 35 species including Bald Eagle, Mallard, Wood Duck, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, and Gray Catbird. Warblers so far include Nashville, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, and Palm. We’re meeting Carolyn and Wally for breakfast in the morning then we’ll go birding. Hopefully, it will warm up a little!

Ohio! Birthplace of the mother. Cleveland, where Pam and Eric lived (and so did I for 6 months). Never want to go back there!
ReplyDeleteI think it's odd that it's named Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, as I certainly think of Ottawa as being in Canada. Where Chris lived for 2 years.
Seems like a nice park, though. It's great you're there for the peak migration, since birds are your thing. Hope you see stunning bird migration sights.
