It’s been over a year since we’ve been camping. We hauled the tent and sleeping bags, etc. all the way out to Maine last year and never did get use them. (If you recall, it rained practically every day while we were in Maine!).
We’ve been scoping out possible camp sites and have just been waiting for the weather to get a little warmer. Most nights it’s still getting into the low 30’s here!
Last Thursday night the low was suppose to be in the 40’s so we decided to haul out all the camping gear and hit the road. We planned a one night trip and were just going to ‘car camp.’ Car camping is where you drive your car to the campsite and pitch your tent right by your car as opposed to packing everything (tent, sleeping bags, etc) into your backpack and hiking a few miles to the camp site.
Here’s Mark setting up the tent:
A couple of nice things about car camping is that you can haul a lot more stuff with you, such as:
Lawn chairs:
And, full size pillows!
We were prepared for visitor’s:
We hiked around a little, looking for birds, etc. We saw a few birds including Great Horned Owl, Pine Siskin, Mountain and Western Bluebirds, unknown Flycatcher.
We had the whole canyon to ourselves. This is the view from our site:
Pretty nice, don’t you think?
Oh Yes! I think it's VERY nice! Did you have to use the bear spray? We just a few minutes ago met Bill Sheehan... (I think you met him last year)... he was taking a few visitors on a tour of the refuge... first time in all the years we've been coming there that we've met. Now... if I could just absorb some of his birding skills.....
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have to use the bear spray, but we were ready!!
ReplyDeleteBill is a crazy good birder. He really knows his stuff and is great with less experienced birders. I wish that we'd had more time to spend with him.

Ah, the fresh mountain air...we will be in Colorado Monday...can hardly wait.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I know I will never go car camping, ever, unless zombies take over and I am forced to for survival, having that much natural beauty to yourselves must have been pretty amazing.
