Alaska Journal - Day 4

May 18, 2017.  Happy Birthday to Mark!

Not a bad place to spend your birthday, is it?

After morning stretch with Mareth then breakfast we headed out to the sundeck to watch the amazing scenery.

Mountains, waterfalls, and rain forest surround us.  We are on board again today as we continue through Canada’s inside passage.

This morning’s on board activity is knot tying.  Way back in the 70’s I used to do a lot of macramé and enjoyed it very much.  A couple of summers ago Mark and I were making survivor bracelets for a Jr. Ranger program and learned several different knots.  We headed down to the lounge to have some fun.

After lunch we headed to the sundeck again to practice knot tying and watch more of the beautiful scenery.

Practicing our knots.

Then it was down to the galley for a tour with Chef Tim. They produced an amazing amount of delicious food in a tiny little galley. The staff consist of the head chef, a sous chef and a pastry chef, along with a single helper!

The bridge sent out a call of Humpback Whales and we headed to the bow.

A young whale put on quite a show for us. It breached about 25 times and performed an amazing number of rolls and dives. It was quite a treat.

After dinner the crew sang happy birthday to Mark and we enjoyed a delicious cake the pastry chef made especially for him.

Next time:  At 1:48 a.m. we changed time zones.

  1. As much as I love the big ships, your small ship trip is looking good!
