You might remember when we first arrived at Green Lake we
were feeding tiny little fish tiny little fish food in round green tanks.
Feeding fish earlier this summer.
These tiny little fish have grown quite a lot and have
been moved into very large, outdoor tanks.
It has been several years since the inside tanks have
been repainted and the staff decided this was the year to get started.
A couple of months ago the student intern started
scraping and sanding the empty tanks.
Fourteen tanks were targeted for a new paint job. The staff was able to get one coat of paint
on 10 tanks before other more pressing issues started taking up their time.
We were asked to complete the tanks and add a second coat.
We opened all the doors and placed fans all around for
fresh air. This is an epoxy paint that
is safe for fish.
Epoxy is a two-part paint. After mixing the two parts together the paint
sits for about 45 minutes before it can be used.
We spent that time getting our supplies together and
getting “suited up”.
My job was to get inside the tank with a brush and paint
the drain and around the edges where a roller wouldn’t fit.
Mark would paint the bottom and sides.
Yep - your computer is not deceiving you - the paint
really is that color!
Fourteen tanks completed
Newly painted tanks on the right. Old paint on the left.
This was the last in a long list of jobs we’ve completed this
summer.
Best volunteers ever! My understanding is that you think to return next year. You'll really be able to hit the ground running next year.
ReplyDeleteYes, we're all set up to return here next year. We worked our final hours today and it is nice to be able to say "See you next Spring" instead of "Goodbye". I have a feeling that there is more weird green epoxy paint in our future!!
DeleteYou two look great in those suits. What are you going to do with all the money you made working this summer? Oh wait, your hourly wage was the same as mine this summer: $0/hr. 😁
ReplyDeleteBut we offer a money back guarantee, right?!?
DeleteWow. What a great job. I am sure that the hatchery is very glad you are returning next summer.
