Watching Birdwatchers Watch Birds

Lots of birdwatchers

We have had a busy three days at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ohio.
Total Bird count: 119; Warbler count: 23

Blackburnian Warbler:

The weather was everything from cool, clear, and sunny to cloudy, cold and rainy. Our mornings were spent on the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge boardwalk. The birding festival was in full swing and the boardwalk was crowded. The bad weather had pulled the birds in and we had some amazing birding days.

Palm Warbler

Northern Parula

Cape May Warbler

Black-throated Green Warbler

Black-throated Blue Warbler

One afternoon we drove to the Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area on Lake Erie where we saw Black Terns. Another interesting thing we came across was a large Bullfrog eating another frog! The frog being eaten just had his legs showing but he was still kicking.

Hard to see but this is a Bullfrog eating a frog.
The pinkish legs on the right are from the frog being eaten.

We've spent so much time birding I haven't had much time to blog but I'll have more pictures soon.

Warblers seen: Orange-crowned, Nashville, Northern Parula, Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Cape May, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Pine, Palm, Bay-breasted, Cerulean, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Proghonotary, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, Wilson's, and Canada.

  1. The second picture of that Blackburnian warbler is so pretty. I think the Cape May Warbler may be from NJ. Cape May is a famous resort area on the southern coast of NJ. Many big, old houses turned into bed and breakfasts.

Ewwww on the frog cannibal. Glad I couldn't really see the frog being consumed.

  2. Hi Julee - That Blackburnian Warbler photo was certainly a "Wow" shot. We saw a lot of beautiful birds. Mark is really getting some fantastic photos.
Cape May is a big birding hotspot too.
I'm glad you're enjoying the blog.
