Archaeology Dig

You’ll never in a million years, or maybe I should say, 8,000 to 10,000 years, guess what this is!
There is an archaeology dig going on here at the refuge.  We were invited, along with the staff, to go on a tour and see what the archaeologist have found.
The local Friends group had received a grant to bring in a couple of Archaeologist for three days to study an area here on the refuge.  The archaeologist put out a call for volunteers and had so much interest they had to turn people away!  Everyone was very enthusiastic and excited about what was being discovered.
We started out with a brief discussion about the area and the items that were being found.  Then, we headed out to get a close-up look.
These folks were studying the various layers of soil (the hole was dug out with a backhoe).
These two guys were sifting through all the soil that came out of the above-mentioned hole.  So far, they have not found anything in the soil.
The rest of the area was being searched just by looking on the ground.  Some of the items were easy to identify.
 Arrowhead
We really had to use our imagination for some of the items.
Pottery
Bison tooth (about 8,000 years old)
Tooth ???
Woody Peat
A lot of the area we were walking on was woody peat.  This area was a marsh for about 8000 years.

Did you guess the mystery picture?

This is the enamel from a Mastodon tooth.
Did you guess right?

  1. Heck No! I didn't even come close! But I sure liked seeing your photos! What a great experience! Bill found an arrowhead years ago on the OU campus where he was working... it's just so hard for me to imagine "way" back then!

  2. No I did not guess right either, not even close! Looks like you guys had a really neat experience. Me I spent the day digging up trees on our barn property. Did not find anything in the ground except dirt! :)
