Time spent sitting in the hotel due to rain: 1 afternoon

Our days off are Sunday - Wednesday.  We try to get out and explore as much as possible (weather permitting).

We left on Sunday morning to drive to Freeport.  It’s about a 2-hour drive and we planned to have lunch on the way and Mark wanted to play a disc golf course on the way too.

You never know what you are going to see driving through some of these coastal towns.

By the time we arrived at the hotel it was raining pretty good and kept on raining all afternoon.

The next day we headed to Scarborough Marsh in Portland to rent kayaks.  Last year we went on a guided kayak trip here through Maine Audubon and have wanted to go back.

The birds are nesting now so we didn’t see very many.

It was a beautiful morning.  We were out about 1 1/2 hours and traveled about 3 1/2 miles. 

After lunch at our favorite BBQ joint (Buck’s Necked BBQ), we headed to Haven’s Candies.

From their web site I knew we would be able to look through windows to see into the candy kitchen.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot going on.  Most of the candy making is done during the morning.

There’s still plenty of fun to be had inside the store!  Shelby was on display.

Remember Needhams?  (See September 20, 2018 Blog: Needhams, Possibly the World’s Most Perfect Candy).

The white candy filling being spread on the cooling table is the inside of a needham (confectioners' sugar, mashed potatoes, and sweetened flaked coconut).  The filling will set up and the workers will cut it into squares the next morning then cover them with chocolate to make needhams.

Decisions, decisions

Bought a few things:  1/3-pound dark chocolate/coconut haystacks, dark chocolate mint patties, 2 dog cookies (See 6/21/2019 Blog - The Dog Days of Summer), and I was given a free magnet.

We went back to the hotel to drop off all our purchases then headed to disc golf course #2 (Cripps Creek).

Our third day started early with Mark playing his third disc golf course (Pineland Farms).

We had a 10 a.m. reservation to tour a chocolate factory (Wilbur’s Chocolate Factory will be a separate blog).

After lunch we headed out for disc golf course #4 (Stevens Mountain).  We’ve had a couple of very busy days.

Day four started a little late.  One of Mark’s favorite disc golf courses (Sabattus - rated #14 in the country) doesn’t open until 9 a.m.  He played his last round - disc golf course #5 and we headed back home.

It was a fun jam-packed four days!
