She's Baaaack!!

Teri and I enjoyed seeing our first ever Flying Squirrel last year as we monitored bird boxes here at the park. We had one occupying Box # 48 for most of last summer and we're pretty sure that she had babies in there.

During our first two weeks of checking boxes number 48 was empty. However, this past Monday I tapped gently on the box before opening it, and out she came!!

We look forward to seeing more of her as the summer progresses, and wonder if she'll rear another brood in "her" box.

The End

  1. When I was in college we had to do a "skin study" of a critter. My cat had brought in a flying squirrel... dead, but totally free of damage. I took it to do my skin study... turns out the college didn't have a flying squirrel taxidermied (is that word?) and traded me my squirrel for a mole or vole or some such common critter. Aren't they the neatest little guys? I've never seen one in action... think they are more nocturnal than diurnal....

    1. Based on that huge dark eye I believe that they are nocturnal. I'd love to see one out in the forest but we never did last year...

    1. They are neat. But why don't I feel the same way about Red Squirrels in the boxes???
