Dolphins and Birds

We had perfect weather for our boat trip. It was a nice, sunny day with a cool breeze but not a lot of wind.

There are a lot of companies around South Padre that advertise dolphin watch boat trips. We had heard good things about Fins and Feathers and knew that we could make reservations for just the four of us so, that is who we went with.

We saw several shrimp boats out. We were told that they were catching bait shrimp.

We learned early on that when Gorgie started to growl, we were going to see dolphins.

When Gorgie started to bark, the dolphins were going to be close.

There were a few birds around too.

Red-headed Merganser

Eared Grebes

Great Blue Heron

The End!

  1. Looks like you guys had a good time!

Need to test your memories because mine is gone. They have a very invasive tree down here called the Chinese Tallow tree, what was the name of the tree that spread so quickly on the refuge after the flooding?

  2. Are you thinking of the Tamarisk, or Salt Cedar? I remember interns and Joe pulling the seedlings up by the thousands last year.

I know that the Chinese Tallow has been a horror along the upper Texas coast, invading wetlands and prairies. Nasty tree!!

    1. That's it! Salt cedar! I could not remember that to save myself, thank you! We were talking about how hard they have to work to get rid of the tallow tree here and I remembered all those people talking about how they had to go out and try to pull all those "salt cedar" out by hand. They use a "hack and squirt" method here to try to eradicate it. I guess the roots go all the way to China!

  3. I want to see some dolphins! I just saw a t.v. show about marine mammals, and of dolphins are very, very smart (which I knew before I watched that show). Some guy set up a bubble machine on the ocean floor where they knew dolphins were likely to be, then filmed it. 4 hours later the dolphins where playing with the bubbles (the were big rings) and finding different ways to interact w/ the bubbles. It was so interesting!
