Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

As promised, here is our best ‘find’ from our trip to Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge. On the way there we saw this Red Fox walking through the back yard of a house that sat alone on Highway 89 and backed up to a wooded area.

They like a mix of open fields and wooded or brushy country. The lower legs and feet are black, and the trail has a white tip. This little guy was pretty wet. There was a lot of dew on the grass this morning.

It’s pretty rare to see these amazing creatures. We watched him until he disappeared into the brush.

  1. So pretty. We saw a fox once trotting down the side of a road -- can't remember which vacation, but it was up in the NE. The fox was walking towards us. I kept going and made a U-turn when I could because we wanted to take a picture, but we didn't see him again. It looked as though he took that route all the time!
